What does your skin need at every age?

Like the rest of your body, skin changes over the years, so your skincare routine should change with it. How can you make sure your skin stays healthy and radiant in every decade?

If you don’t already have SPF in your daily routine, start now—and don’t forget to include your hands, neck, chest and ears. Either your daytime moisturizer or your foundation should include SPF. Choose a cleanser appropriate for your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive, etc.) and use an oil-free moisturizer at night. If you still struggle with acne, even with over-the-counter treatments like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, schedule a visit with the Tri Valley team to learn about other options. Make sure you stay hydrated and get enough sleep, and if you smoke regularly, find a way to quit! If you are already concerned about fine lines and wrinkles, you may want to look into preventative Botox treatments.

In your 30s, you tend to notice damage (like sun spots or broken blood vessels) from what you didn’t do in your 20s. Your complexion may be less vibrant because cell renewal has slowed. If you don’t already, now is the time to include a retinoid in your nightly skincare routine. Products such as elure™ Advanced Skin Brightening products can reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone. A nightly eye cream can keep that area’s fragile skin hydrated and flexible. Regular exfoliation also increases cell turnover. You may still struggle with acne, but at this age it is usually related to hormones and your menstrual cycle. No matter what, keep up the hydration and SPF! Chemical peels and dermaplaning can help control the skin damage you may already have, and can encourage cell turnover. If you have acne scars, microneedling can reduce their appearance.

how to keep your skin looking you: spf protection, moisturizing and healthy livingA woman’s estrogen levels begin to decline in the 40s and 50s, which can dry out the skin and contribute to wrinkles. This may also lead to more acne (just when you thought you were done with it for good)! You may want to look into a moisturizer with anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as polyphenol and grapeseed extracts. Your facial cleanser should be non-foaming and non-drying. Your skin may be losing its ability to produce collagen, so keep up with a retinoid. Hormonal changes may make your skin more delicate, so maintain sun protection every day. You also should be drinking lots of water and limiting alcohol consumption, as too much booze can contribute to dehydration! The staff at Tri Valley can provide products if you have more serious concerns. At this age, dermal fillers for the face can help fill in wrinkles and sagging skin and preserve youthful contours. Laser treatments with Vbeam Perfecta can help reduce the appearance of brown spots, visible veins and scars.

Moisture and protection should be your primary concerns. Your skin’s production of the natural oil known as sebum usually declines around this age, increasing dryness and sensitivity to changes in environment. You still need SPF, so don’t leave home without that protection! You may want to switch to a cream or oil cleanser, which can remove makeup and dirt without drying out your skin. Frequent retinoid use and exfoliation can continue to encourage skin-cell renewal. Your body may not be able to deal with stress hormones as well as it used to, so efforts to reduce stress—such as yoga or decreased caffeine intake—can make a big difference in health and well being. If hormonal changes are affecting your quality of life, changes in diet or bioidentical hormone replacement therapy could help.

Your skin may be thinner and more fragile at this age, so it is time to cut back on the vigorous exfoliation, especially if you have been using a retinoid or glycolic acid. Products that gently slough off dead skin cells may be preferable. It’s still not too late for SPF! Depending on your particular skin type, you may want to avoid heavy creams—they can sometimes clog pores or make skin look slack—and use oil-based moisturizers and anti-aging serums instead. CO₂RE skin resurfacing treatments, tailored to your individual needs and skin type, can help with age spots, sun damage, rough texture, discoloration, wrinkles and other imperfections.
